I can say categorically that the buggy that AMT used for the model of their original Meyers Manx model was a clone. Its the same one as in this picture except they have air brushed in a badge and removed a rib on the hood. It was owned by a photographer/writer for Dune Buggies and Hot VWs named Don Emmons. The license plate number was California VSP 121. The Japanese then used the model as a model for their battery powered toys, they even kept the same license number. I have a photo of it showing the rib that runs down the hood. I'll find a photo of it and post it Image

I must say Monkiboy does have an extremely nice looking buggy. I don't remember seeing it in the BOTM.

Thanks for the link Plasticman!! Not a bad looking buggy actually. I didnt see any Manx badges or script on it either. Heres a quote fron the entry... "The buggy is a Meyers Manx replica (not a clone!)" Anyone know what the difference is between a replica and a clone?
Cairo, Can I come play with your toys????? (nice collection)
I used to have a real bad monkey on my back. I discovered ebay back about 1997. I spent many hours hunting ebay for Dune Buggy toys. That was before I learned about esnipe, so I had to manually bid on what I wanted whenever the auction closed. I have three or four large moving cartons packed with old dune buggy toys. Unfortunately a week or so ago I saw the variety of different colors of Hot Wheel Meyers Manx, on this forum. Now I'm hooked again

wow- people can be real @$$holes can't they? first off, monki's buggy is sweet. i'd rather have that buggy than a real manx thats been in the garage and is still being built 3 years after starting it.these were designed to be built in a weekend or two after all. next , i can appreciate the history of the manx. and that it was the original. but everyone beating their chests need to realize that if it wasn't for clones and , to a lesser extent, other original design buggys, they might not be as popular as they are today. there would have been A LOT less of them and it probably would have been a fad that burned out quickly. this is from the history section of this site: "the Meyers Manx started the off-road revolution by building 5,280 Manx kits...The Meyers Manx was so popular that other manufacturers sprung up overnight and ended up producing over 250,000 look-a-likes and near look-a-likes." clones made the design available to a lot more people - globally.and much quicker.they really fed the fire that Bruce had begun. it is unfortunate what happened to Bruce and the manx though.of course it wasn't right ethically and he deserved a patent and monies for his work, etc.I don't think anyone is going to argue otherwise. If its not a manx , you don't call it one.fair enough and as it should be. but where do you draw the line with clones? is a Manx II a clone? I think so.It's not the original run (i count the monocoques as a protype because it was so limited and led to the real thing that most of us are familiar with) and it's a lesser quality than the original, let alone the quality of a large number of 'clones'. Weren't some of the original molds shipped overseas and built there? are they considered authentic? what about when those companies went under and someone bought the molds? would that be authentic since its the original molds? would it be a replica? a clone? last I checked the homepage here said "Welcome to The Manx Club's Official Website. The club is open to fiberglass dune buggy owners of all makes and models." so if Bruce can obviously appreciate them for what they are as well as his own. can't the rest of us?
is a Manx II a clone? I think so.It's not the original run and it's a lesser quality than the original, let alone the quality of a large number of 'clones'.
Have you been drinking???:drinking: The Manx II it one of the rarest of the Manx's . I have one of only about 250 made before Bruce left the company. and it is original right down to the gelcoat. The quality is the same as the Manx I A clone is a clone. a Manx made overseas is just that (insert american flag here). As far as clones and popularity goes, less is more. When I got my Buggy I had never seen one before. Now, they are everywhere I hate that. I was looking forward to haveing something truely unique. now I have just another buggy except for the fact it is an original MEYERS MANX! how dare anyone try to pretend they have a classic when they have a COPY of a rare and beautiful car. I have a clone as well. I will be rebuilding it this winter. when it is done I have every intention fo beating the *^T&%$&% out of it on the beach. As for my Manx, it has been restored to 1970's exactly and will stay that way. I will drive it for sure but I will respect it for what it is. An original piece of americana. As far as being welcome, I for one welcome all buggy owners but lets get it straight. A Manx is a Manx. I have been trying to buy a Shelacko buggy down the street from me for about a year. That buggy is sweet for sure. I would restore it just like I would a Manx. but it is still not a Manx...( insert chest beating icon here)
