Clone with original badge
Yet another opinion. I'm like mvovr, I have a "buggy" and have had several different "buggies" , none of which were a manx. This did not use to be such a big deal, but lately the manx chest beaters have been getting louder. Right now I have a honest to god manx knock off that I am selling. I never have said it is a manx, and named it Nada- cause its nada manx! I always wanted a real manx but I have decided to not build this one and not worry aboutwhether I ever get one. Why? Because of #$%@ like this thread. I can modify my buggy as I like without getting the " How could you do that to a classic crap" that seems to be more prevalent these days. Alot of folks here are getting as bad as the other fiberglass groupies,(vettes), with their "I have a MANX!" attitudes. Can you imagine the flack if someone exstensive modified a true manx? Sacriledge! Ya'll need to chill out. Even Bruce (who I have met and admire) likes alot of the clones. If it's not a manx, don't say it is, but remember all buggies are just VW kit cars, not a Porsche or Rolls. Kevin #893
I went back and read all the posts in this thread and haven't seen anything that can be construed as Manx chest beating or Manx attitudes. As far as I can tell, everyone has said be happy and enjoy the buggy you have, but call an apple an apple don't call an apple an orange.

Hey, here's some more clones, I'm always glad to promote my current home town... A newer model of the Wienermobile was built by Prototype Source, a company in Santa Barbara, California, that specializes in building one-of-a-kind vehicles and concept cars. Prototype Source is also the creator of Hershey's Kissmobile, which was first commissioned by Hershey in 1997 to celebrate the 90th birthday of Hershey's Kisses.

hmmm, now that gives me an idea. if it's a clone of the manx, maybe i'll make a clone of the badge. make it the same shape, maybe with a lynx rather than a manx , and the wording in the same script but just saying LYNX instead of MANX. that'd be an interesting conversation starter...
Since I started getting involved with dunebuggies I have met alot of people. Like most of us I like to show off my projects. I have a ManxII (authenticated) and a very close clone. The Manx is finished, the clone is not. When people come to see my buggies I am quick to point out the subtle differences. I enjoy edjucating people on the differnces between my 2 cars. I Am ceritan I could pass off the clone as a Manx and all but the diehard fan wouldnt know the difference. I could never do this. I have the utmost respect for Bruce and his creation. I went to a WV car show in Englishtown, New Jersey last year. There were 5 dunebuggies on display. 3 out of the 5 sported the manx emblem is some form. There wasnt one real Manx in the bunch. I stopped short of saying anything about it as I was new to the scene. When I show my all original '70's correct Manx along side these fakes next year, I will definatly point out what is and isnt a Manx. I will bring literature to back up my facts. To me it matters alot.
Okay, maybe I should chill out too. And if you're into show cars that would make it more important. I'm not. I like to drive mine and not worry about scratching it. Mvovr, I like your attitude! I'm betting Speedee was a Manx, cause I remember a smooth hood. But I'm getting old and the memory is going so don't quote me. I don't say much here anymore due to MY seeing a change of attitude. I guess I will go back to the occasional lurking so as to not upset the rest of you. Just my :2cents: Later Kevin #893
yes it was wrong to say "Bruce liked it" all I ment by that was it had been acepted for the comp which made me very happy and still does.
Wrong in two ways, actually(but who's counting). Bruce doesn't personally select the particpants for the BOTM, the webmaster accepts the submissions. My BOTM submission went directly to the webmaster, as did yours; we were in the same month's running. Back on topic: I have an original Manx, but I didn't have the opportunity to build it myself like many older 'buggistas' did; it was built in 1968, 2 years before I was born.....that's why I'm enjoying the thought of assembling my wife's Ranger (Manx clone) buggy in the future. We can personalize it, whereas the unrestored Manx is staying 'as is' for as long as possible - right down to the original gelcoat. I like Wyobuggy's name for his buggy...I keep referring to my wife's as "SNO MANX." I never used to be qualified as any sort of 'Manx chest beater,' but I have deep respect for what Bruce gave to the hobby.....and what he gave up for it too. Clone buggy makers and bottom feeders like James Hale have been pulling rugs out from under Bruce for decades now, yet he still heads out to the shop 7 days a week to make buggies - any lesser man would have found a new line of work 20 years ago. After spending a couple of days with Bruce & Winnie at their home back in February of this year, I got a deeper appreciation of what these silly, oft-copied little cars mean to the guy that created them. He loves each one as much as those of us who have taken them into our homes.
Has anyone seen MonkyBoy's buggy? he stated he entered it in BOTM. is there a way to see all the buggies ever entered? Just curious to see this infamous non-Manx clone.
Ask and ye shall receive, brother Scott.
