Tow'd serial information

Post by Siggymanx33 »

Does anyone have a copy of the registry handy to tell me if any Tow'd's had a four (4) digit serial number attached to them? I came across one and I always thought tow'ds started with a T of TO or TF? Thanks for any help, Dave

Thanks for the quick response Manxter10. So what you are saying is that 4 digits onlywith no t/to/tf is completely legit?

Dave I have a Tow'd #1432 and it is fiberglass , I talked to Winnie and she thinks the 4 digit number was made after Bruce left the Company , this is a maybe.

I looked through the registry and agree the early Towds serial numbers begin with a T0(letter,digit), not TO(letter, letter). I see the three oldest Towds in the registry; T0108, T0109 and T0115, all have J8(Oct 68) date of manufacture on their ID tags. I've got number 0109. I know it was raced in the 68 Mexican 1000, which was Nov 68. This is a picture of it. Image

CairoAManx, D&C picked up another Tow'd the other day to add to the stable they already have at Oak View Farms. Starts out with TD and is orange. Has some pictures on RBC site under is "Your buggy getting a Christmas present?".

Joe, That would be the only TD on the registry. However, there are two TVs, one is in Colorado and Richard Brown has one in Louisiana. I wonder if the TV was some kind of Towdvair. I'll have to call Richard and ask about it. I looked at the number sequence on the registry again. The sequence of the serial numbers actually overlap between T,s and TF's. However, they definitely switched over from T to TF in Feb 69. T0108J8(Oct 68) Oldest T T0447B9(Feb 69) Newest T TF158B9(Feb 69) Oldest TF TF901H0(Aug 70) Newest TF I did see one TF that was built in M9, the thirteenth month of 1969. There is also a TF909C9. It has the highest sequence number but C9 was the second month of TF production. I wonder if it really is TF209C9. All the other TF's made that month had TF2XXC9 serial numbers. Dennis and Cathy have all the luck. I checked out the picture. Super nice find.

CairoManx, I misunderstood what Dennis told me. The ID is actually TF7440013S. He also says the other one he has is starts with TF.

Joe, I believe it must be TF744C013S. I think C0 is the date of manufacture in the center of his serial number. I know TF740 has a B0 date, and TF770 has a C0 date of manufacture. If it was O0, that would mean it was built in the fifteenth month of 1970. Manxter10, It looks like the code explanation for Towds on the registry has an omission and also an error. It doesn't mention TV serial # Towds and there at least two. It also says 4 digit serial number Towds were "early Tow'd". However it makes more sense that just like Manx's with 4 digit numbers they were very late, i.e., just like Winnie said, "after Bruce left the company"

CairoManx, Talk to Dennis again and he went out a looked a little closer and it is a C instead of 0. So from what I understand this would mean it was made in March of 1970? Also is there any way of knowing if there is differences in the code for Tow'd verses a Tow'dster that came with fenders?

Joe, I'm pretty sure the Towdster parts were just sold as accessory pieces you could add to your basic Towd. Image Even the hood and windshield were accessories on a Towd. Image
