Sand Dune Question (Witches Eye)

Post by mel hubbard »

The ''Witche's Eye'' or ''Black Holes'' can anyone shed more light on the subject???? It intrigues me,,, I kinda know a bit about em (very little,, like,, ''don't go there''),,, is it true they can swallow up a buggy?

Witches Eyes are formed by the wind blowing the sand and usually form just over the lip of a dune. They vary in size from being a large pothole on up. They don't literally "swallow" a buggy, but they can stop you pretty fast and if there are others following you it can get interesting. Once you're in one it can also be difficult to get out.

If you drive at night, be careful. I watched a guy die in Ocotillo Wells when I was 11 years old after he hit a rock in a wash. The eyes , steep razors, etc are more of a hazard at speed. Take a shovel and some kids with you. (kids dig shoveling) And always try not to break something expensive until the last day.
