Here's wishing you all Happy & Prosperous New Year from the freezing North West of England!!! I've just got back from Xmas in even colder Southern Ireland but I'm off to the Florida panhandle tomorrow to (hopefully) thaw out on the 'Redneck Riviera' but I'll be there too late to watch the ball drop. I'll be able to watch Alabama slaughter Texas in the Rosebowl on live TV though with my two new friends...I couldn't afford the cost of the tickets for the game in Pasadena... Image

It's a southern thing (mostly Carolinas) for luck and prosperity for the new year. We have it every Jan 1. I can't speak for the prosperity, but since Sue has put up with me for 17 years, I guess the luck is holding out :-) Here's a little history: http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/HoppinJohn.htm Did you have any hoppin john?
Mel, My beautiful bride and I shared collard greens and hoppin john (contains black eyed peas) on New Years day. Bud
Thanks Bud and a happy new year to you and Sue, you sound like real traditionalists!. I like this kind of history, its not something we hear much about on this side of the pond. My daughters seem to like a different type of black eyed peas,, not so much hoppin john from SC,, more Hip Hop from LA :)
