Cam question, Porsche 356 engine...

Post by Cooper »

I've got my Porsche 356 1600S engine out of my Manx tore dowm, I've got a question about the cam. Is the cam gear the same as a VW? I noticed that the gear has the # 111.109.111, and the VW logo on it. I need a new gear, and if they are the same, I'm sure the VW is cheaper. Anybody know? Coop

It is a 36hp Volkswagen engine cam gear. I don't know what the availability of the gears now days. It has a different helix (less pitch) than was used in the 40hp and later VW engines.

Ok, I'll just buy the Porsche gear, sounds like the easiest option. I was told the 36 horse gear also has to have some machining on the alignment pin and cam bolt holes in order to be used on the Porsche camshaft. Thanks... Coop
