Steering Quick Release

Post by Gene-C »

I have one on our Manx's 1961 steering column. I had a "spud" made that slipped inside the steering shaft & the quick release & then they were TIG welded together. The spud helps strengthen the union of the shaft & the quick release mount. I'm using a stock VW 3 wire turn signal switch, but I chose to mount the horn button on the side of the steering column housing. I also shortened the outer housing, so it goes from just below the quick release down thru the dash/support & about an inch past the bulkhead. Then I have a solid shaft from it down to the steering box. In effect, it makes it a "collapsable" steering column. I'll be busy most of today & when I get home this evening, I'll post some photos. It's ALL Fun, Fun, Fun... ManxManiac
Here is a thread from awhile back with lots of pics etc. http://www.meyersmanx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3217
That one looks like the cats meow. When I hit the loto I will put it on my next buggy. It looks like you can lock it on with a key? That would be cool, plus it has a horn button.

Kind of pricey, but according to the Grant website they have one that fits. Part Number: 2001 Vehicle Security System. Designed for use with Grant steering wheels only. Allows removal of the steering wheel when parked. Ideal for most cars, trucks, and vans. The ultimate answer to vehicle theft ... NO WHEEL, NO STEAL! (To be used with 3000 & 4000 Series kits only.) For security, I bought a "Club" at a garage sale for $3, when applied with my steering wheel cranked all the way right, the "Club" just fits between the fromt loop of my rollbar, and the windshield. The only way to drive the car would be to break a lot of things, or remove the steering wheel and replace it with something else, like vice grips. Works pretty well for peace of mind when at the supermarket.
