Meaning they will not be asked to do the Mania, Membership or? Some of these jobs a strictly voluntary. Know what I mean? Bob K."

BOD Election My Expectations

Post by Gene-C »

I believe that the newly elected BOD as a body will need to wait to see what the strengths of the individuals are. Keep in mind that the BOD needs to identify the members with the necessary skill sets and then encourage each individual to do what is best for the Club. In other words the BOD should direct, not do the actual task. The Club should be thankful that the existing BOD has members who were up to doing the tasks required to get through the first 1.5 years. I really believe that the Club has a high number of very qualified members who are ready & willing to take on some of the Club related tasks. This will free up the BOD to set the policy that those doing jobs can follow. Let?s say that we have a member who owns & runs a high quality printing business. This individual wishes to donate his resources to the Club. Would we be smart to place this person in charge of the production portion of Club printing or should we continue to have you & Anita continue to do the production of the newsletter & me do the printing of the registration items. All of the printing processes could then be under 1 person, who would advise a single director of the status & needs of the job. This would allow for the registration person to obtain a single years printing at 1 time. It would allow for flyers, release waivers for runs to be printed on an as need basis. Most of all it would free up a Director to direct not do the actual task of printing, or arranging for printing. The BOD should be looking for the smart way to run the Club, and then format the policy for those performing the actual tasks. In any event, the newly elected BOD will have to shake themselves out and put the Director with the best skill set, experience, etc into the various positions. I feel that we need a strong President to direct, guide, and advise each member of the BOD. The BOD needs to remove any & all obstacles in the way of the officers performing their required tasks. The BOD needs to develop the protocols necessary for each facet of the Club. There are a lot of decisions being made without the full consensus of the BOD. Some of these are items that will have a big effect in the next 2 to 3 years, as they are applied and reacted to by the members. I feel there will be a big uproar about the member?s understanding of the term ?not-for-profit? or ?non-profit?. If we add in a request for a neutral 3rd party CPA to write checks, audit books & processes, how do we justify the expense to the members? An even bigger concern is the lack of Directors & Officers Insurance, the lack of a liability insurance policy for the Club. I think about this lack of insurance every day. The reason for the concern is a very simple one; I do not want to lose everything I have, because the Club has no insurance. There is a big difference in what profit is and what is termed cash flow. The Club needs money to operate. Without a healthy bank account the Club ceases to exist. I do not feel that the Club should operate off of anyone?s pocketbook or credit card. We should charge a reasonable fee for dues & runs. We should have fees based solely on what the costs of services to the members are. The present BOD has done a lot to get the Club moving. We have a regularly published newsletter, we have a process whereby the members receive timely notice of their individual membership status, we have the ability to select dates for events, and for these events to draw large numbers of members. It will be up to the newly elected to keep the momentum going, to look into better ways to do things, to embrace new ideas. The most important item concerning the new BOD is that they will need to select offices with strong leadership, and communication skills. We need Officers & Directors who can show their intelligence when they address the Club. People who understand how to pull a group of mavericks together in order to reach a goal

The strengths of the individuals do not make the Board. The strength of the Board comes from the membership ... Leadership as defined by Alan Keith of Genentech "Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen." Leadership is a skill earned by following ... We as Board Members each carry a unique and individual vision of where we are and need to go ... A functional board combines those visions with the membership to be a conduit into the future. Mark
