Fire extinguisher mount

Post by Gene-C »

Does anyone have suggestions/photos for mounting a fire extinguisher to a Manx Club roll bar? My goal would be to either mount it on the vertical post (facing the rear so as not to interfere with the retractable seat belts), or on the horizontal behind the headrest. Thanks,

I have mine mounted behind the driver's seat on the back of the roll bar just below the level of the body so it's visually out of the way, yet is easy to get to if needed. I just drilled and tapped a couple of small holes to put machine screws in to hold the USCG approved mount.

this looks cool and expensive enough for a buggy... Brey-Krause Manufacturing R-9521 1.5" and 40 mm Roll bar Fire Extinguisher Mount The R-9521 is designed to allow you to mount a fire extinguisher directly to your roll bar or roll cage. The R-9521 can be used with either a standard 2.5 lb fire extinguisher mount or the R-9520 quick release mount. All aluminum construction makes for a safe mount that doesn?t add a lot of weight to your car. Don?t let a poorly secured fire extinguisher ruin your next trip to the track. Safety inspectors aren?t letting them pass and neither should you. Product Specifics: Material: 6061 Aluminum Finish: Clear Anodized Weight: 0.70 pounds Models: All Installation: Attaches to any 1.5" or 40 mm roll bar tube Miscellaneous: Includes inserts for both 1.5' and 40 mm diameters. See our store for Amerex ABC fire extinguisher or R-9520 quick release bracket (optional) Image

Hi Mike, I have to admit, I am not crazy about having it mounted that high up on the roll bar, but I would imagine that the seat belt would rub up against it, causing the webbing to wear over time. I am hoping to find a method that will allow the fire extinguisher bracket to be strapped (stainless steel is no fun to drill). Fubar, that mount looks hot, but the Manx Club roll bar is 2 inches in diameter. I do appreciate the feedback, guys.

Can't you just fit the bracket to the roll bar using hose clamps? Simple effective and cheap.

Hi Mark, Yes, hose clamps would obviously work, and they would also scratch up the finish unless I protected the stainless steel with some sort of tape, padding, etc, and that is just not the look that I am after, but thanks for the feedback. After giving this more thought today and checking the web for alternative sources and ideas, I think I am going to have some velcro straps made that should do the trick. If this does work, I will post the result (and if it turns out to be a bust, I will chalk it up to experience).

my sand buggy had one mounted on the mesh floor right in front of the drivers seat. That worked well until I high centered and wiped the bolts off. Maybe a turbo stregnth cup holder type of thing would work?

I would be reluctant to permanately mount something the size of a fire extinguisher with just velcro straps. If you go off-road, they will eventually stretch and come loose. This is where I mounted ours. Two screws and a couple easy to tap holes. Three years later it is still on tight.

Gary, sorry I can't help you on the fire extinguisher mount issue, (haven't got that far yet with my build), but sure would appreciate some specifics on your seat belt roll bar anchor mounting, e.g., threaded or bolted, size and strength rating of hardware, did you maintain some rotation of belt fitting, etc.? Many thanks.

Hi Roger, I will be glad to give you as much info as I can; you may want to start by checking out some of the photos I posted on 12-27-06 (http://www.meyersmanx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4133&page=2&pp=10&highlight=berrien+buggy). The spacer provided with the upper seat belt attachment does provide for full rotation, just as it would in a standard Beetle install. Here is an additional photo; please feel free to ask any other questions that you may have.

I am mounting mine on the frount of the seat, as part of the seat frame under my legs. It is easy to get and out of the way. :2cents:

I'm going to mount mine on the main hoop of the roll cage next to the drivers seat. I'm just going to use hose clamps on mine. Although I want it to look neat, my buggy is going to be used off road a fair bit so it has to be mounted securely.
