is this a fair price for an engine?
is this a fair price for an engine?
Its a 1641 cc dual port w/ dual solex carbs. I took a look at it today, He says it was recently rebuilt, and I believe him. It is complete turn key and comes w/ a brand new alternator. $1500. Sound fair? Thanks -Brian
Seems quite steep to me as well. I picked up a rebuilt 1641, with stock carb, C-35 cam with alt, new carb, exhaust, and good OG tin, for $400 last year. You could find (or build) something a lot better for the price. I know, I know, you get what you pay for. But $1500 is a LOT for a used stocker, regardless. That's PREMIUM dollars for a stocker...
recent rebuild means used, solex carbs means used and most likley wore out. on the other hand I sent right at $1000 in parts to rebuild one of my 1600"s five years ago. I'am factory trained in germany. I did not get screwed on parts. The motor still runs at 135 lbs compression and has had the holey liven s$$t ran out of it. In a sand buggy, So it could be worth it. With the carbs and being a 1641 I'd guess he did a short cut rebuild.
re
he's east coast though it looks like. nice engines don't grow on palm trees here like the west coast
even with a decent priced turnkey shipping will kill us. thats why i went local. but i paid quite a bit more than that, even though its 1776cc.but i started from scratch and had a shop build it up the way i wanted it.
You might try watching the wrecking yards - I just sent a buddy to one that had a wrecked super in it - he bought the entire car for $50 and robbed the engine, guages and rims - then left the rest at the yard. The engine turned out to run great! I traded for a complete 65 beetle that had a 1641 with about 3000 miles on it with dual Kadrons. Total trade value was less than $200.00 I have robbed the car for my build, the engine is not running yet, but I have no doubt that it will with a bit of help from Uncle Bob. (I hope his offer still stands) The deals are out there, just look for them. Also, put an ad in the paper offering to buy VW stuff - you might be surprised to find what is offered to you for just the hauling off.... BUT I AM CHEAP -

I have a turn key dead center of Pa, it was in a buggy i just purchased, i haven't tried starting it, and i know it hasn't run in the last 3years (atleast) Its a single port. email me an offer. im still undecided weather or not i want to let it go. when i get the first one done, i might want to have to, you know HIS AND HERS, or mine and my other one, which ever it works out to be. boozer@dejazzd.com
