Buggybob, Those pics help out a lot. I couldn't figure out the straps were or where they mounted. Are you using a double springplate? Something looks differant than my stock setup. Thanks for your quick reply! Dan

Bobmanx, that picture helps to figure out what they are and where the straps are mounted. I'll drop ya a email if you can forward a larger format photo. Thanks again for your help. Dan

Dan, BuggyBob's straps appear to be on an IRS (69 & later) rear suspension, the pic fro Hibbard's book and my pics are on a swing axle suspension (up thru 68 approx) Hope that helps make it a bit clearer. Bob

Here's an update on what my specific problem turned out to be. The torsion cover plate was warped and it allowed my swing arm/spring plate (what ever it's called) to bow out. I put a new (used) cover on it and the arm/plate now sits on the stop just fine. Bud

Would a switch over to adjustable spring plates, still require a retainer strap to keep things from bending during use? Dan

Springplates are going to twist during use, no matter if they're swingarm, IRS, adjustable or both. That's why they're springplates, that's what they do. What you want them to do is spring back to original. The straps help keep everything in place. Using good quality german OEM springplates also helps. Unless you find some US made SAW adjustable springplates somewhere, they'll probably be Taiwanese. They'll be adjustable but probably more likely to take a permanent set(bend).
Image Bud, I saw this method of springplate raising in a guys post on thesamba, and have used it with great success. It reduces the "guillotine" factor considerably. It's way better than messing with the floorjack, etc. If you can't see the pic above, here's the link: http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u280 ... Medium.jpg
Good timing,Just getting ready to install my plates,,I like that a lot better then the jack,,Looks like it would be hard to give blood with that set up,,
