OT-Return of the F-Body
Mel The movie your thinking of is Two lane Blacktop , 1971 with a orbit orange 70 GTO Judge and a primer gray 55 rat motor chevy ( that same car later became the wicked black chevy that Bob Falfa aka Harrison Ford drove in American Graffitti )race across USA:driving: . The JUDGE was driven by Warren Oates known only as GTO and the 55 was driven by James Taylor (the singer) and his mechanic was Dennis Wilson ( ya the Beach Boy). Talk about the price of gas ! in 1971 when I went to work pumping gas at a SOHIO station in Ohio it was 39.9 for premiun and when it went to 50.9, I thought "O" my god thease people are going to lynch me , they fricken freeked out!
Since we are talking about non-VW, non-buggy cars, I would like to share a photo. These two are owned by a friend of mine, who has some interesting cars:
The one on the left is a '68 Mercury Cougar (second year Cougar), and the one on the right is a '61 MG Midget (first year Midget). The Cougar is undergoing a 'forever' restoration (it's taking forever). The Midget will be getting a bigger engine and a paint job soon. Although far from being drag racers, both cars get a lot of attention. Strangely, the Cougar in its primered state gets more attention than his other '68 Cougar XR7, which is cherry! Go figure!!

This is my neighbors 1958 Austin Healy. I worked on it on and off with him for 27 years actually more off
. It's powered by a 502cid Ramjet EFI Chevy Crate motor hooked to a built Turbo 400. The car is on a custom tube chassis w/ coilover Mustang II front suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes and a narrowed Ford 9" rear end with an adjustable 4 bar setup and coilover rear suspension. The front "wings" were handmade by a local craftsman from aluminum sheet. He also used an english wheel on the bonnet to arch the factory scoop a little more so the bonnet would close over the the EFI plenum. His best 1/4 mile time is a 10.12 on street tires. The car will also hold it's own on a twisty road. OH...The black 33 Ford coupe sitting next to the Healy is mine...It seemed like it took forever but I finally have my "Hot Rod". The picture was taken at my towns weekly cruise night.

This Duesenberg is owned by a friend of mine. He has another one with original black paint also. However, this is my favorite. Double over head cam, 4 valves per cylinder and super charged all in 1932. He also has a couple Cords, Packard, 55 T-bird, and numerous other things I can't remember. This one was originally owned by movie producer Howard Hawks. He offered to let me drive it once, I was hesitant, but figured I would never get a chance to drive another one. I told him I couldn't replace it if something happened to it then took off, very carefully of course.
Sorry, best picture I could find on Internet.
One more.
One more.
At one time (pre fatherhood) I had a 71 Chevelle SS. It had a 454 LS-6 that I built up, Turbo 400 with a shift kit and a 3.73 12-bolt posi. It would turn low 12?s on street tires through the mufflers. I used to drive it to the Street Machine Nationals in downstate Illinois from outside of Chicago. For the weekend I would go through 130 gallons of gas! It usually got about 6 mpg around town. The best mileage I got was 10.5 hwy. The burnout shot was for an ad we were doing. The client needed some tire smoke, I was happy to help out. They also bought me a new set of tires. I miss this car on a daily basis.
