Im putting my axels on to my new trans,,I found a crack on both sides of one of the diff side gears,,,No big deal,,Have 2 more,,,I put it togeather and it binds bad,,,Have correct thickness between the axel and the fulcrum plates,,Have tried all 3 gears and its the same thing every time,,BIND,,,The left side works great,,,,Only thing I can think is that I have a bad Axel,,,What do you think ????????

You're supposed to add shim/gaskets under the side covers until the swingaxle axle covers don't bind. The axle itself is supposed to pulled outward by the axle nut. The axle might might bind if its too far in and you try to swivel it.

Could you explain what part is binding. Is it the axle spining? Axle tube when you move it up and down? Something else? There are several reason for possible binding, incorrect shiming, bent axle tube or axle, and a few others.

I know about the gaskets and the side covers,,,Something is just not right with the right axel,,,I install it with the thrust washer and snap rings,,pull outwards on it and turn it,,And it binds up,,,Something cracked the other side gear on both sides,,,Like I said,The left side is good,,,So I think I well order a new axel and give it a try,,Thanks Tim

If there was something wrong with the axle(damage or wear) you could see it fairly easily on the thrust faces. What about the back side(curved) of the fulcrum plates? Are they perfect?

Every thing looks perfect,,Smooth,,,I think tomorrow I well pull the left axel out and install it on the right side to see how it works,,,That should tell me if it,s the axel,,,,,

VW did use 2 different side gear/ spider gear combo. There is a 17 tooth side gear/ 11tooth spider gear. And a 15tooth side gear/ 10 tooth spider gear. If you had cracked side gears check for scaring inside the differential from them.

left axle stays on left

It is not a good idea to flip your axles. left should always stay on the left. Flipping axles switches the direction of rotation on the axle. the stress on the axle switches the torque, and the axle is more apt to fail under load. Every thing I have read states that you should never flip axle direction.

I took out the left axel and installed on the right side,,No binding,,,Hummm,,Tried it in both side gears and it works great,,Must be the axel,,,,Ordered a new axel and a set of plates,,What the hell,,Its only money,,Its funny,,When I started this project I thought its going to be cheap,,Hell its a VW,,Good thing my Dog,,Cat and I like beans,,,,,,,Thanks to all,,,,

Yes you do not won't to ever swap axles from side to side as they do take a set and will break at the spade end. You can polish off the rough edges of the spade end using a belt sander or some kind of sanding disc. The cracking of your side gears is not uncommon when transmission is used hard with more power than what was stock. Drag race starts, landing from a jump with full power on, steering brake with full power on and a few others that I have seen over the years. As for gear oil use a GL-5 or better. GL-4 is what VW recommends but it does not have the Extreme Pressure additives in it to keep things from galling under high loads. And you will see it in premature wearing of the parts of the differential.
