As I watch the posts and people talk about 1641, 1776 and so on, How is the engine size determined in a VW engine. I know it is in cc's, But is the size changed by just bolt on products.

The displacement of a VW engine is increased the same as any other engine, by increasing the swept volume, i.e., by making cylinder bore (and piston diameter) larger and/or by increasing the length of the crankshaft stroke. However, yes within limits you can increase engine displacement on a VW by bolting on larger cylinders. The stock 1500 has a 69mm stroke and 83mm bore(I think). You can "bolt on" 85.5mm bore piston/cylinders and increase the engine to 1600cc. However, any larger cylinders have a larger outside diameter and require machining out the case and head to fit the larger cylinder spigots. Installing a longer stroke crankshaft requires "splitting the case", and rebuilding the engine from the bottom up, which is definitely not a "bolt on" procedure. I know it is in cc's, But is the size changed by just bolt on products.[/QUOTE] 1640cc is a "bolt on" set of pistons and barrels.No machining or other changes are required.You simply change the pistons and barrels. 1776/1916 and upwards are more intensive and the case and heads require machining to fit the larger barrels.They go like a shower of **** though.....but get some decent heads to match the increased air flow for the best performance.
