They came both in copper and chrome. Enjoy, I have them in both of my buggies!

I believe that the chrome was pretty common and the copper was special (fewer units made, more $$$), however, I've received that information "nth" hand. If you need either the plastic base housing or the round rubber boot you can get them from Chris Seeger at L5VW.com or find them on TheSamba, sometimes they sell on Ebay. They sell the complete set of rubber boot, plastic housing and the black shift knob here. Or, just the rubber boot here. If you need just the plastic housing or the black knob, maybe they have those as well (not currently listed on TheSamba).

Most of the copper ones that I've seen have had wooden knobs.

I have one of the copper wood combos that has sat outside too long. It looks like it would still function, but it is real fugly. The wood is checked and the plating is toast. Do they work well? Or is it just the "period" thing to have?

the color is more a 'period' thing to have. but the original hursts are supposed to be some of the best. up there with bergs.
