How do I find out what trans and axel that I have for the purpose of getting new seals and bearings.The trans looks like any other. number 113 301 103 D with what I think is a serial number. #9458559. But the axle is about 3 inches longer than the standard bug axles. They have a number on them #311 501 169 B P. (170 B P on the other side).

Here's a useful list of gearbox codes... http://www.partsemporium.co.uk/Gearbox%20codes.htm Just guessin' but 311 part numbers usually denote Type III derived parts (ie Fastback, Squareback etc.). I think these cars did have the longest driveshafts too.

Thanks Manxdavid, I have seen that website before, but what is confussing to me is that my transaxle don't have any lettering code on it (AA---AB--AD) or anything like that. Just the numbers that I posted. what makes it harder for me sometimes is the fact that when they shortened the chassis they cut the section out with the numbers on it. So I don't know how to ID the transaxle.

What seals are you looking for? Rear axle seal kits fit all swing axle transmissions. The gasket set for the whole transmission comes with gaskets and seals that will fit any year tunnel type 1 transmission. Comes with gaskets and orings depending on what differential side plates you have. Long axles where used on Type IIIs and Type 1s. 1967 bug had long axle with short splines for wide 5lug drums, all others used longer splines and 4lug drums. Your transmission maybe a combination of different years as parts are interchangeable to some extent.
