The Ridge Route Needs Your Help!

Post by 5150bossman »

I am still keeping an eye open for the Ridge Route in So Cal to re-open (with hopes of getting a buggy run on this historic road when it re-opens). As of right now, the Ridge Route Preservation Society is in a bit of a political battle with the Forrest Service to get the route re-opened. There is an e-letter online letting the head ranger know that people support the road being designated as a National Forest Scenic Byway that can be signed electronically. Please go to the link and sign your name and address in support of this endeavor. 100 years ago, this road is what made So Cal what it is today. Without it, we would most likely be two states with no North/South transportation corridor between here and Bakersfield!

Thanks

Mike,
I added my name to the list.
Exploring the original Ridge Route is something I have always wanted to do.

DONE... ditto!!!Thanks for the "heads up" Mike! I did not know they had closed it.
On Thanksgiving Day 2003, Patricia & I drove Xena on a little adventure that included cruising the old Ridge Route. It was fantastic with some awesome vistas & views! We also saw an unbelieveable amount of wildlife... bobcats, deer, skunks, raccoons, several varieties (gray, tree, ground) of squirrels & a million species of birds! The best part was we only came across 2 vehicles & 4 humans! Image Just a few days ago, we had discussed running it again this Thanksgiving Day, but I guess we'll have to reschedule.
It sure is a cool adventure!

Mike, you and Patricia must have been one of the last people to get to drive the route as a slide took a good portion of the road out just after that. It's been closed ever since. Now the forest service wants to keep it closed, but it's just too important a road to let fall into just another piece of lost history.  Check out the rest of the Ridge Route Preservation Society's web site for some good history and other assorted info (you can start from the same link I posted earlier).

Be sure to tell your friends and direct them to the site so they can sign the letter too.

I too did that Ridge Route back in the late 90's on a MC dual sport ride and everything Mike said is true. The road had several ares where it had fallen away but was still navigable. For cars of the day the road's only danger was going over the side. Today's autos would find it very frustrating. I hope the cost of repair doesn't prevent it from being repaired. Besides the wildlife, the lack of people made it twice as nice. I'll sign the petition and hope it does some good.

Embarrassed that I'm so late to the party . .  But, got it done today!  I'd love to go over it. Thanks Mike!
