Ceramic Coating Costs

Hey All;

Does anyone have any idea on what it would cost to have an exhaust ceramic coated? My Manx Exhaust is showing some real signs of age and I'm thinking about getting it freshened up. However, it still sounds good...

Most sources I've looked up online looks like they charge just under $200.00. Of course, they haven't seen yours yet and a VW header is not very large or complicated. This place charges between $180.00 and $700.00 (!):

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just get a new one, as I just can´t think the hassle will be worth the difference.

Scott,
There used to be a place that did jet coating out by the Camarillo airport just off the freeway. Don't know if they are still there but if your ever in the area check them out. On the South side of the freeway (between the freeway and the airport) West of the Los Posas exit I think you need to take the Del Norte exit to get there, in a little industrial area off the frontage road.

I just bought a raw steel sidewinder from MM. I bought 8 oz of white Ceramic coating from Carolina coatings and applied it with a paint gun.I did have to sand blast the whole thing with aluminum oxide prior to coating it as they are quite particular about prepping and handling prior to coating.
It turned out really nice...but I have not run it yet. The cost was about 70.00 for the 8 oz so it is kind of pricey but I wanted the white for the monocoque engine.

Here is a side note. The sidewinder design although similar is physically bigger than the older ones MM used to sell. The bend radii on the tubes has increased, the resonator has increased in diameter and the tail pipe is downright huge. I have to say that I am not super excited about the overall size increase on the exhaust...just too big in my opinion.

If you have an older sidewinder (the bolt on resonator style) I would be interested in buying it should you purchase a new one.

Small world Bob. . . I've been meaning to go to that exact spot to find an airplane upholstery shop that supposedly does amazing custom full coverage buggy tops and doors. AND, I'm going through there tomorrow on my annual trek to participate in four days of March Madness revelry. So, I'll check it out and let you know what I find. I have the smaller detachable resonator type of sidewinder that I'd also like to get coated white for my monocoque. I'll throw it in the Durango tonight just in case the place does exist. Thanks for the heads up!

I have just sent my sidewinder (old style with removable glass pack/flange) off to Jet-Hot (they are located ~3 hrs from me). I haven't gotten it back yet so I can't comment on the finish but I can tell you my exact cost. FYI, it is cheaper to buy a new one (as long as shipping isn't greater than $79) if you like the newer style. My Cost breakdown: Shipping (25lbs) ~3hrs away - $25, cost to remove the old ceramic coating (extra charge for this pleasure) - $50, cost to coat with ceramic coating (Jet-Hot Extreme 1300) - $250, cost to ship my sidewinder back to me (flat rate) - $49. Shhh, don't tell Sue. smiley: embarassed

We just received ours back from EmBe Performance in Long Beach CA. This unit was first coated over ten years ago. We did try a few paint coatings that failed each time. EmBe media blasted inside and out, then coated the inside with copper then the outside with "Bright Sliver". We have tested it with short runs... all seems great. The cost was $200. + shipping.

I thought I'd update my post. While the cost was significant for the ceramic coating, what I will add about the company I used is that they offer a life time warrantee on their coating. Since I've finally gotten around to pulling the recoated sidewinder out of the box and installing it I felt like before/after pictures might be in order.
