New Clutch Pedal Shaft Design

I am going with this setup http://cma-vw.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=12 on my Kick-Out SS and Kathleen's Mendeola S2 chassis conversion.  One of the beast features of this is the custom length stainless steel cables available.  Tom

New Clutch Pedal Shaft Design

Post by Ed-Chenal »

This is a copy of an old entry.
I bought two of the clutch pedal shafts that Doran describes in this old entry and installed one in my buggy http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1087010. I have the old style pedal assembly (cast steel) with a Kennedy Stage One pressure plate. I immediately noticed that my clutch pedal was much more difficult to depress with the new shaft. I removed the new clutch pedal shaft and compared it to my old shaft. When I measured the clutch arm on each, the new arm was 1/4" longer than the old one, 1 1/2" vs 1 1/4". I measured from the center of the shaft to the position on the arm where the clutch cable would attach. The shorter clutch arm made it easier to depress the clutch. I then measured a new after-market clutch shaft arm and it too was the longer version.

Two experienced VW guys told me that the early model pedal assembly clutch shaft arms are shorter than the late model pedal assembly clutch shaft arms. They also said the the early model clutch lever on the transmission is shorter than the late model lever. Conclusion....the wrong combination of clutch pedal shafts and clutch levers could make depressing your clutch pedal very difficult while the right combination could make it easier. It's all a matter of leverage. I reinstalled my old clutch pedal shaft.

Perhaps Unique-Parts will consider making a clutch pedal shaft with a shorter arm.
