CB Performance Air Boxes & Hex Linkage

Post by Scott-Drolet »

I've been getting my burro ready for Calico, and some of you might remember that I have had all sorts of issues keeping dirt out of my weber idle jets. Well, I'm pleased to announce that I've got two things to help (hopefully) fix that problem. First, I've added Jet Doctors, and second, I've put on a new CB hex linkage that incoporates their sand system air boxes. The last filters I tried were dual Uni filters with Uni oil. Although I think I did a pretty good job oiling them and sealing the tops and bottoms, I still got dirt in the idle jets and had to pull and clean them three times last month on the Baker to Laughling run over the Mojave desert. There's a company close by to where I live, AEM, that manufactures dryflow airfilters. These are synthetic air filters that are supposed to filter better than either cotton gauze or foam oiled filters, but AEM filters do not need to be oiled. Well, seing how I hate messing with those dang Uni-oiled faom things, I thought I'd try these clamp on units. Now if these filters don't work, I plan on installing a centrifigul air cleaner somewhere higher up and route 2-1/2" tubing from the CB air boxes. So, either way, the boxes weren't a waste of time, even if the AEM clamp-on filters don;t live up to thier promises. I'll let you know how it goes at Calico. . . I'v posted some pictures below. First, here's a link to an AEM article on a Baja 1000 truck they sponsored last year: http://www.aemintakes.com/news/news.aspx?ID=2424 Here's a link that talks about the AEM filter media: http://www.aemintakes.com/dryflow_air_filters.htm Here's a picture of the new CB Performance hex base linkage that accepts the air boxes. Note the Jet Doctor "Snorkels" and the CB supplied 1" tall velocity stacks. You can also see the rubber gasket that seals the air box to the base: Image Here's the air box cover attached: Image Here's the new clamp on AEM Dryflow filter. This one measures 6" diameter by 9" high. They also come in other shapes and sizes. I know this one is a little big, but I want as much surface area as possible to run the air through: Image Here it is installed, including a filter wrap: Image

Scott, with no fiberglass covering the motor area, the skys the limit. Hope it works for you.

With all the steps you have taken, it seems strange that you would still be getting debris through the air intake. Maybe you should look in a different direction. It is possible that the debris is in the fuel, not the air. I run two seperate fuel filters (one before, and one after the fuel pump). Dirt, sand and rust can easily get into the tank, and the only place it can go is down the fuel line. If the filter misses it, then it ends up in the carb. When you installed the Jet Doctors, did you pull the carb all the way apart and give it a good cleaning? When I installed mine, I discovered a huge amount of debris trapped inside the carb (IDF 40). That stuff can also break loose easily and end up blocking the jets.

Hi Mike . . .Yeah, I know. You'd think there'd be no way to get dirt in there! Thank you for the timley reminder about fuel supply. I have an aluminum tank and it appears to be very clean. On your advice, I'll add a second fuel filter tonight and see if that helps. If I still have problems I'll pull the tank after Calico. And, yes, I did clean out the carburetors really well when I put in the Jet Doctors. It's running perfect right now, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thank you for the helpful reminders, Mike. It's so easy to get stuck worrying about air quality that you forget fuel impurities clog the idle jets too.

Hi, I'd like to put the cb airboxex on my Manx with the big round aircleaner inside the car. please can you tell me how high the boxes are included the neck? Do you think they can be fitted on a Manx? thanks a lot, Davide

Hi David, the boxes are designed to take up the same amount of space as the standard oval shaped K&N or UNI foam filters. They're only about 4" tall including the neck. They should fit your manx fine, particularly if you're just running hoses off of them onto a remote filter somewhere. By the way, the AEM Dryflow filters worked great! No dirt whatsoever in the idle jets this time (although, it's also the first time I ran Jet Doctors, so they may deserve the credit). I think my jetting is a little off, had minor hesitation at the top of the power curve. But, they ran great off the line and in the middle of each gears power band. Looks like I almost have these things dialed in!
