It looks pretty nice(but the roll bar has to go). Its got a dune buggy style windshield. Its on the wrong coast for me to check out. I wonder if Empi stamped any serial numbers on them. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=343719 Image

I would not have known what you were talking about had my wife not found a July 1963 issue of Motor Trend on Ebay. Cover story was about the Empi Sportster. Other notable reviews in the issue was the Toyota Land Cruiser and a rather informative article on a new tire technology of belted tires. That particular car looks a bit worn in comparison to the near new cars reviewed which included one Corvair powered Sportster.

Image Tom, Now I know what issue the article I saw on ebay was from. There's a guy up in Live Oak that's had this on Craigslist for a while. Its pretty close to a Sportster but its got the wrong fenders and no cargo box. I'm sure its home made. However in addition to Sportster kits, Empi also sold just plans. It does have a current registraion and a nice original Black and Yellow plate. It could probably be converted to a nice Sportster replica without a whole lot of work. Like I said, aluminum diamond plate would make a real cute body. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/220976893.html
