I Tow'd you I need some Help!

Post by Stevec2005 »

Hi guys, first time post!
My name is Steve, I have come into possession of what I believe to be a meyers manx tow'd, correct me if I'm wrong. This was bought by my grandparents about 16 years ago from a friend. We had a blast and used to rip it up in this thing. Mind you my mother got all 4 wheels in the air once! Then about 10 years ago I ran it into a tree bending the frame and front axle. Sadly it has sat in a barn ever since.

This past weekend I brought it home and decided to get to work on it. It took about an hr, a new fuel line, fresh fuel and it started right up! Even got to drive it! But now for the POINT!

I would love some advice on where to start, where to get parts, and how much money is really worth putting into it. I have an idea, I've done stuff like this before, but from reading a bit on your forums, these bad toys have some classic value and I'd like to adhere to that.

Any advice would be great!

Hi Steve,
First welcome to the Tow'd clan! As for parts etc.... that would really depend on what you are trying to do. From my own personal experience as I am in the process of a full tear down build, the sky is the limit! If you are looking for more of the fiberglass body parts (ie:towdster kit) the Meyers Manx store still sells the fenders, and engine cover etc. at http://www.meyersmanx.com and check out the store link. Since it looks like you have the ID tag in there, you should definitely get it registered with Meyers Manx as well. I know there are a lot of Tow'd people on here and more are popping up. This is a great location for getting help. Feel free to ask any questions yoy may have. Look forward to seeing what you plan on doing wth it.

Steve, Welcome to jungle! If you can zoom in on the tag located in the center front foot well, that looks like a Meyers Manx id tag with a serial number. There are plenty of parts out there and definitely lots of knowledge amongst this forum for fiberglass repair and everything else. Scan the different write ups on this forum for all kinds of insight. Hopefully we can get you back on the road and having fun!

Remember it's YOUR buggy, build it the way YOU want!

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum, you're buggy looks like a nice unmolested Tow'd, I specifically like the original Gates Commando rear tires.
Based on the fiberglass damage in the area by passenger seat I think the first thing I would do is remove the body and assess the extent of the frame damage. I know from experience that the frame can be straightened by a good body shop with a frame machine.

I will get a good picture of that tag tomorrow.
I also plan to get the body off as soon as it warms up. I can do the fiberglass work. I may just upgrade and put a new front axle on. And I already have a body shop in mind to do the frame straightening if it's possible.
Thanks guys,
This forum opposed to others sends extremely helpful!

I am not having much luck finding a body shop that's willing to try straightening the tube frame. I have been given a new complete front end. Started cleaning off the metal. But at a loss in terms of finding someone to pull that frame straight. ..

What about a regular steel/fabricaion shop? They work with bending and welding metal tubing all the time. Afterall, this isnt really a vehicle frame like a body shop would be used to. Just a thought to think outside the box a little.
