The stock shift rod does have a bow in it to clear E-brake parts.

The shift rod from the '71 bug I rescued has a slight bend in it. It is a built in bend to allow for clearance in the tunnel. To see the relation from the shifter end to trans link end place the rod horizontal on a bench and look at it from the side. It won't have much of a drop, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch at the most. The front of the rod should be parallel to the bench.

I learned by asking the same question. When I looked at my shift rod for the first time I noticed the bend. I immediately called another member and got the answer, "It's supposed to be that way." This is not a stupid question. Just an honest search for the truth. Glad I could help.
